CHINNOR maintained their unbeaten start to the season with an impressive six-try victory over Bury St Edmunds.

Despite the final scoreline, the match was far from all one-way traffic as a spirited Bury side put the table-toppers under some pressure in the second half and scored two very good tries as a result.

And Chinnor boss Matt Williams was quick to give credit where it was due to the valiant losers.

“That was perhaps the toughest match up front we have had this season,” explained Williams.

“Bury played with a lot of endeavour and they gave us a tough time.

“We did well not to concede a score in the first 25 minutes and, once the bonus-point try was scored, we became a little loose.

“But, all in all, it was an efficient, workmanlike performance.”

A badly palmed lineout ball by Bury saw Ross Parkins react quickest for Chinnor’s first try with just four minutes on the clock.

The visitors staunched wave after wave of Chinnor attack until CJ Osazuwa pounced on a loose ball from the back of a ruck and pirouetted his way over the whitewash for the score midway through the first half.

A pair of conversions and a penalty from Sam Angell ensured the hosts went into the interval 17-0 to the good.

Chinnor looked to have the match well-controlled despite Bury’s persistence.

And they came out smartly in the second half with Nathan Hannay and then No.8 Tom Burns both crossing the whitewash in the first few minutes of play.

However, to their credit, Bury made a contest of it for the next ten minutes,

camping out in the Chinnor 22.

Although they were intially without reward, eventually a midfield break saw Liam McBride put replacement Shaq Meyers away for his side’s first score.

Chinnor’s flying winger Kieran Goss then danced through three defenders for their fifth try.

Bury came back with another siege of the home line with Ben Enoka eventually forcing his way over.

In the dying minutes, the long-legged Hannay ate up half the pitch before offloading to the electric Henry Lamont, who put skipper Bevon Armitage in

And Angell completed a faultless kicking performance for a 45-14.

But, despite the defeat, Bury coach Gavin Hogg was sanguine about his team’s performance and believes the positives were there to be taken.

“We met a side who took their chances clinically,” admitted Hogg.

“Chinnor managed possession better and we were guilty of losing the ball too often – they always punish any mistake severely.

“We take heart from a good period in the second half where we scored twice and put Chinnor under prolonged pressure.”
