Jones: We’ve got long way to go

-

ENGLAND head coach Eddie Jones insists his unbeaten team are still nowhere near where he wants them to be.

“When I took the job I had no expectations. All I knew was I was inheriting a side put together by Stuart Lancaster that had oodles and oodles of talent.

“My job was to make sure that talent produced performances. We’re starting to do that, but we’ve got to get better. We’re nowhere near good enough at the moment.

“There’s always been depth in England rugby. It’s about the players having more ambition and we’re starting to see players with more ambition to be topclass international players.

“One of the most pleasing things for us is to have three of the six nominations for world player of the year now.

“My job is to make myself redundant. When I’m redundant the team will be functioning well.”

Scrum-half Ben Youngs said: “This is another step to where we want to get to – No.1 in the world, but to get there we need to control the ball better and put teams under more pressure.

“We did leave some points out there.

“Eddie has been brilliant at installing team belief and self belief. Today was an example of how much I am enjoying my rugby.”

England will spend time this week working on their discipline after conceded six penalties in the opening 20 minutes

Youngs added: “We allowed them to get easy field position, so that is an area we need to work on.

“But I felt we were able to come up with solutions and sort it out pretty quickly. On another day though we might have had someone in the bin.”

Springbok coach Allister Coetzee says his side badly need a victory after losing five of their last six games.

“There is no lack of effort in the team, there is no lack of effort at training. We need to get a win. We were right there for 30 minutes but paid for unforced errors.

“New Zealand and England have different styles but they are the best two in the world at the moment.”
