Students no match for league leaders Pontypool

SWALEC Championship round-up

- By BEN JAMES

PONTYPOOL kept up their unbeaten record with a convincing 68-5 win over Cardiff Met at Pontypool Park.

Hat-tricks from man of the match Rhodri Usher and Ben Sparks as well as further scores from Ben Egan, Ollie Drake, Josh Hurley and Aaron Coundley sent the hosts on their way to ten straight victories.

Leighton Jones’ men now sit nine points clear of their nearest rival following their perfect start.

Tata Steel remain hot on their heals in the table after defeating Glamorgan Wanderers 26-22, while Newcastle Emlyn came away from Bedlinog with a 24-20 win.

Skewen edged out bottom-of-the-table Newbridge 9-8 in a tight encounter at Tennant Park for their first win in five games.

A try from Luke Morgan had given the struggling visitors the lead, but the hosts had the last say from the tee to seal victory. Fellow strugglers Dunvant could not hold on to a one-point half-time lead as they fell to a 50-20 defeat at home to high-flying Narberth.

A try from Dunvant hooker Ceri Davies and the boot of Richard Lewis had helped the hosts to a 20-19 scoreline at the break.

But tries from Rhys Lane, Liam Hutchings, Nick Gale and Joe Hutchings crushed hopes of a home win as Narberth scored an astounding 31 unanswered second-half points to record a bonuspoint win and remain tied on points with Tata Steel.

Glynneath closed the gap on fourth-placed

Beddau with a 27-21 victory at Abernant Park.

Tries from Ben Jones and Jordan Griffiths and 17 points from kicker Dylan Francis secured the victory for the hosts.

The visitors had Thomas Sheppard and Glenn Slater cross for tries while Callum Wheeler added 11 points from the tee to ensure Beddau left with a losing bonus point.
