Club rout Macc with Geoff on form

- ■ By GRAHAM COX

BLACKHEATH recorded an emphatic victory despite an at times shaky set-piece as they opened up struggling Macclesfield with ease in broken play, with the last of their eight tries coming as the hosts were needlessly reduced to 13-men in the closing stages.

A Leo Fielding penalty opened the scoring in only the fifth minute before the first try arrived, Jamie Davies crossing after a Geoff Griffiths free-kick.

The visitors responded quickly as Tom Mantell crashed over on the shortside of a maul, but Fielding popped the ball up for Mike Perks to cross, and soon after the right-wing himself benefitted from a lovely off-load from Griffiths for a third try.

Griffiths then sidestepped to race home for the four-try bonus, and with Fielding adding his fourth conversion, Blackheath led 31-5 at the break.

A scoreless 18 minutes ended as Jake Lloyd scored in the right corner, but Mark Cooke crossed from the restart, with Tom Baldwin also scoring out wide to bring up the half-century.

And although some pressure from Macc saw a late try from Max Smith for the visitors, before Griffiths crossed for try number eight to complete the rout and leave Macclesfield on two wins.
