Basement Blaydon beaten at the death by Hutch

- ■ By JOHN BRENNAN

AFTER only reaching the home 22 twice in a first half that ended with them 14 points adrift, Cambridge found their form in the final quarter to run in three tries themselves and finish worthy winners over Blaydon.

The home side, on the other hand, had the luxury of the opening score in under two minutes when winger James Cooney splintered the Cambridge defence and send in Ruaridh Dawson.

And lots more chances went begging before Cooney again made a vital break, with Andrew Baggett finishing off this time.

It was Blaydon's game to lose at this stage, but after the break Cambridge were a different proposition, running hard at every opportunity and the home defence eventually cracked.

On 52 minutes Lawrence Hutchinson was held up short, and play was quickly switched to the other flank where Albert Portsmouth crashed over.

And the dust hadn’t even settled when the visitors were back in situ for Portsmouth to storm in again and the deficit was down to just two points.

Blaydon held firm for a while but were penalised in front of their posts, giving Cambridge a simple kick to take the lead.

But Cambridge elected for a scrum, moving it along the line for Hutchinson to apply the finishing touch that clinched th victory.
