Scunthorpe suffer in 11-try defeat

- ■ By GEOFF LIGHTFOOT

THIS result, coupled with Sale’s defeat at home to league leaders Caldy, saw Sedgley Park edge to within two points of second place.

Park meant business from the off as a break by Andrew Riley put Richard Lapori away for the first try, Matt Riley adding the conversion.

Scunthorpe, who had started well, hit back with a try from Tom Hughes converted by Steve Johnson, but with Paul Urmston proving a handful for the opposition at scrum-half, the half-back sent Sam Lowthion over for the second.

And it was the winger who brought up the third with Urmston working some magic at the back of the scrum to create the opportunity. Matt Riley again adding the extras.

Although Sedge went down to 13 men, Jimmy Lloyd and Matt Riley both seeing yellow, the visitors were unable to take advantage. And following a charged down clearance by Rob Holloway, Andrew Riley went in for the fourth and bonus point.

Lowthion brought up his hat-trick for 29-14 at the interval.

In the second period Riley hit the line from full-back to take advantage of a scrum under the visitors’ posts and make it six, before Max Skofic and Callum McShane brought up the 11, Matt Riley adding a further four conversions.
