Frewen ensures Aberavon can’t bounce back from loss

Newport .......... 30 Aberavon ........ 24

NEWPORT held off a late Aberavon charge to secure their fifth straight league win.

Elliot Frewen scored a brace of tries for the Black & Ambers as the Wizards crumbled to their first back-to-back losses since March 5.

The hosts enjoyed the early possession but were left with no reward after Arwel Robson saw a penalty attempt drop well under the bar. But he made amends in the 17th minute when he kicked to the open hands of Frewen in the corner, who dotted down.

Aberavon were sloppy and paid for it when Tom Riley battled his way over out wide for the second try.

Matt O’Brien took over the kicking duties from the struggling Robson and added a penalty before the break.

Steffen Williams put the Wizards on the board in the 47th minute with three points, but Newport came marching back as Frewen bagged his second in the corner to extend their advantage to 17 points after O’Brien’s impressive conversion from the touchline bisected the posts.

Aberavon were given a glimpse of hope when Will Price tapped down Robson’s botched clearance by the posts.

But Robson’s drop goal and John Morris’ dive settled their nerves.

Robson and Alex Jeffries departed to the sin bin before Chris Davies and Jake Baker crossed late on for a deserved consolation losing-bonus point for the visitors.
