Lloyd try denies Rumney a shock victory

- ■ By JAMES LLOYD

EAST-CENTRAL strugglers Rumney were unfortunate not to come away from leaders Treorchy with victory, as they squandered an 11-8 lead with minutes to play. Jacob Lloyd bagged a last-gasp penalty to save Treorchy’s blushes and crush the hopes of the lowly visitors.

Lloyd had opened the scoring in the first minute before Rumney, who have only two wins to their name this season, hit back to lead 11-8 in the final minutes of the game. Lloyd held his nerve, though with the three points late on. Cardiff Quins overcame Llantwit Fardre 48-24 in a thrilling encounter.

Aberystwyth closed the gap on leaders Kidwelly with a convincing 52-12 win over Waunarlwydd in the West Division.

A brace from Gruff Jones as well as scores from Carwyn Evans, Paul Stubbs, Adam Carvell, Rhodri Richards, Steffan Rees and a penalty try moved them just two points off top spot.

Loughor chalked up just their second win of the season with an 18-13 victory over Penclawd. Rhydyfellin kept up their unbeaten record as they cruised past Senghenydd 65-0 to stay top of the East Division. With second-placed Penallta’s clash with Abertillery postponed, the leaders took their chance to extend their lead at the top with doubles from Chris Phillips and Lewis James helping them on their way. Nelson moved up to second in the league following a 36-13 win over Brecon. Pwllheli kept the pressure on Nant Conwy in the North Division, as they overcame Llandudno 36-13. They sit two points behind leaders Nant Conwy, who swept aside Colwyn Bay 43-0, but have a game in hand.

Aberavon Quins kept their place at the top of the West Central Division with a 21-16 victory over Kenfig

Hill while Bonymaen swept aside Seven Sisters 52-5 to move up to second place.
