Dominant Reds blow away the Villagers

- By BILL HOOPER

A SUPERB first-half performance from Redruth, which saw them lead 21-0, blew away promotion-chasing Chinnor in an action-packed game at the Recreation Ground.

The result delighted Redruth assistant coach Adrian Rutter who felt his side had followed the gameplan to perfection and scored at crucial times.

“We never let them settle,” he said. “We knew Chinnor had some big ball carriers that we had to stop getting any momentum and we did that.

“We know from old what a danger Greg Goodfellow is at the base of the scrum, so we looked to nullify his threat.

“Having knocked them off their momentum we then opened them up with two scintillating tries in the first 12 minutes to set up our platform, then to score either side of halftime left them with too much to do.

“Credit to them for scoring a couple of late tries but it didn’t take the shine off our performance.”

Chinnor started brightly with good territory and possession, but they were undone when conceding two tries in the space of five minutes.

Lewis Vinnicombe made a superb break into the Chinnor 22, timing his pass perfectly for Jack Oulton to go under the posts.

Chinnor contrived to cough up two successive line-outs five metres from the Redruth line before they were rocked back by another long-range score, as the mercurial Alex Ducker scored one of the tries of the season.

Having gathered his own kick from the ten-metre line, he bamboozled the Chinnor defence, and Brett Rule added the conversion, as he had for Redruth’s ear-

lier score.

Chinnor’s Basil Strang missed with a penalty attempt as did Rule for the Reds. But crucially Redruth scored a third try just before half-time as Shaun Buzza broke a tackle to make the line with a couple of Chinnor players hanging on, Rule’s conversion making it 21-0 at the break.

There was no let up from Redruth early in the second half, centre Joel Matavesi wriggling over in the corner for the bonus-point try.

Angus Taylor took on goal-kicking duties, and although he missed the conversion he made amends with a penalty shortly after.

Steve Castle and Luke Hibberd scored late tries for Chinnor with Oxford Blue Strang adding a conversion with the final kick of the game.

“We made far too many mistakes and some of our decision-making was poor,” said a frustrated Chinnor head coach Matt Williams.

“I was especially disappointed with our line-out.

“We let chances slip away at crucial moments but fair play to Redruth who deserved the win.

“We will look to regroup and put right what went wrong.”
