Porter’s late try steals an unlikely victory
A LAST-GASP try for prop George Porter and a nerveless conversion from James Moffat saw Cinderford steal a come-from-behind win at Bishop’s Stortford.
The visitors started strongly and within two minutes took the lead through Harry Robinson, who broke a poor tackle in the corner.
Stortford fought back though and two tries from close quarters by second row Matt Tomlinson after ten and 18 minutes, sandwiching a Cinderford penalty for a scrum offence, took the score to 12-8.
The visitors conceded three more points for a shoulder charge on Tom Coleman, for which Porter was yellow carded.
And with time running out in the first half, Stortford attacked from their own half and a perfectly judged chip by Tom Coleman was collected by Will Simmonds, who touched down for a converted try to take his side in with a fairly flattering 22-11 lead.
The hosts then came out strong, scoring a try under the posts through Jimmy Rea after some great interplay by the backs, but the rest of the match belonged to the visitors.
Aided by a few Stortford penalties at breakdowns, Cinderford kept the ball throughout, producing two tries for Porter and one for replacement scrum-half, Jimmy Williams.
Porter’s second came in the 80th minute and crucially was close to the posts, giving Moffat an easy conversion to win the match.
