Bassett pops up at the death to fire Llanelli past Drovers

- ■ By ALEX BYWATER

A LATE try from prop Richard Bassett earned Llanelli bragging rights over regional rivals Llandovery and a seven-point win at Parc y Scarlets.

In a game which swung back and forth and, with the tie locked at 15-15 entering the final few minutes, Bassett grabbed victory for his side late on with Dion Jones adding the conversion.

Llanelli had already missed out on a place in the top eight for the second half of the season, but their success means they can go into the remainder of the campaign in high spirits.

The two teams turned around with the home side 10-5 ahead, a try from Jonny Lewis added to by a penalty and conversion from Billy McBryde.

Wales Under-20 international McBryde – the son of Wales forwards coach Robin – is a promising talent but his side were pegged back just before the break as Jack Maynard crossed for the Drovers.

Maynard missed the conversion, but the visitors started the second half with a bang to move back ahead.

In the 48th minute Joe Powell added Llandovery’s second try and with Maynard converting and James Davies booting a penalty, the scene looked set for an away win.

Euros Evans’ side led 15-10 going into the final ten minutes but Llanelli were not to be denied.

A try from Jones levelled the scores before he added the coup de grace to Bassett’s winner. Star man Dion Jones - Llanelli
