Warriors sunk by Germain’s bomb

- ■ By SEAN REES

GAETAN Germain came off the bench to kick a penalty on the last play to deny Worcester in a hardfought draw in France last night.

The Warriors, who needed a win to have any hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals, led 7-0 at the break after Marco Mama burst over the line 24 minutes in, carrying two would-be tacklers with him. Brive started the second half in emphatic fashion with Poutasi Luafutu burrowing over from close range, but Worcester hit back on 56 minutes through Gloucester-bound prop Val Rapava-Ruskin. Ryan Mills converted but seven minutes later the score was level again as Guillaume Ribes crashed over from the back of a driving maul.

It looked like a draw was going to be a deserved outcome as the teams traded blows all game - but Germain had other ideas.

On the last play, the French pack marched forward and Ian Davies awarded them a penalty 40 metres out.

Full-back Germain, left, is not the Top 14 top pointsscorer by chance and he landed the kick to snatch it at the death and send Brive top of Pool 3 going into the last round.
