Kirby’s late kick completes stunning fightback
Richmond ...... 34 Scarlets .......... 32
RICHMOND scored two late tries and Rob Kirby kicked a last-gasp penalty to snatch a dramatic bonuspoint over the Scarlets.
This success will be a big moral boost for the Londoners who resume their battle for Championship survival in two weeks, while Scarlets will have to beat Nottingham next week to reach the quarter-finals.
Two long-range efforts from Tom Williams and Ryan Conbeer helped Scarlets open a 12-0 lead in less than five minutes but No.8 Harrison Edwards reduced the gap, picking up from the back of a scrum.
His opposite number Jack Condy was next on the board but two tries from Matt Corker and Rory Damant had Richmond lead 19-17 at the break.
Scarlets and Williams started the second half like they did the first however, with the winger going over for the try bonus-point.
A yellow card to Jack Maynard for a deliberate knock on set them back, although they still increased their lead to 13 points after Torin Myhill barged over form a driving maul. McBryde converted before slotting a penalty.
But a second yellow, this time to Morgan Allen for killing the ball, sparked Richmond’s comeback.
Toby Saysell and Jonno Woodward went over but Rory Lynn missed the second conversion leaving them a point adrift. Enter Kirby, who replaced Lynn, to become the hero with the penalty on the last play after Scarlets were pinged at the breakdown.
