Jersey blow Blues pack off the park

Cardiff Blues ..10 Jersey .............. 55

JERSEY boss Harvey Biljon is already looking forward to his side’s crunch tie with Ulster after thrashing Cardiff.

Jersey were dominant from the early exchanges and crossed for eight tries in a comfortable win. No.8 Nick Haining scored twice as fly-half Sam Katz kicked 15 points.

“It was a massive game for us to put ourselves in a position for next week,” said Biljon. “Our players stuck to the task and didn’t let the game get too unstructured. We stayed with the plans we’d set out and that was pleasing.

“I was delighted with our scrum and line-out and that gave us the platform for victory.”

Full-back Jack Cuthbert opened the scoring in the third minute and Katz booted his first conversion before Sean McCarthy added Jersey’s second try.

That opened the floodgates, with Haining’s first effort and a conversion from Katz making it 22-3 to the visitors at the break.

Kieran Hardy and Haining scored within minutes of the restart. Hooker Jack MacFarlane added another on 50 minutes before Max Argyle and Jake Armstrong completed the rout.

Biljon added: “Our pack gave us the chance to score some nice tries and we’ll need to do that again next weekend.”

Blues coach Richard Hodges said: “We weren’t able to compete with the size and physicality of their pack. Our scrum was blown off the park.”
