Defence hold firm for Amps triumph

A much-changed home side, reacting to last weekend’s loss to Darlington Mowden Park, took the lead on three minutes with a simple penalty from fly-half Joe Tarrant, and extended the lead four minutes later with an unconverte­d try from wing Sam Baker.

Amps dominated territory and possession but were denied time and again by strong defence and poor execution.

Until the 39th minute, that is, when, after multiple phases from the forwards and backs, prop Brett Sturgess took the final pass to crash over by the right corner flag, Tarrant’s conversion cannoning back off the upright.
