Newey leads rout of sad Canterbury
Canterbury .... 25 Clifton .............. 42
JAMES NEWEY scored two first-half tries as Clifton stunned Canterbury with a six-try demolition.
Clifton showed powerful running, strong rucks and creative passing as they ripped Canterbury’s defence apart in the first half, sewing up a bonus point in the 30th minute.
It took centre Newey three minutes to dot the first try down, before flanker Joshua Bayliss scored a second ten minutes later.
Canterbury hit back through No.8 Hugh McCormick-Huston, but Clifton picked up steam again and ran in two more first-half tries through Max Woodward and Newey.
Substitute Kieran Thompson reduced the gap before the break, giving Canterbury hope of a comeback, but Clifton came out for the restart all guns blazing.
Tight-head prop Alexander Giltrow powered across for their fifth try and winger Malcolm Peacock added his name to the score sheet with a well-taken effort.
With the game already done, Clifton relaxed in the second half, content on seeing the game out as their defence remained on top.
Canterbury scored two late consolation tries through speedy winger Guy Hilton and then McCormick-Huston with just two minutes left.
