Game Esher can’t handle hot Steff

- ■ By RICHARD DORE

A POWERFUL six-try performance from Ampthill saw off Esher and strengthened their third-place position in the league.

All was level after 30 minutes, but Ampthill took over and left the home side scoreless in the second half.

Esher opened with a third-minute penalty before Ampthill levelled things up in the 12th minute through the boot of Joe Tarrant. Oris Nawaqaliva then saw yellow early in the game but Esher were unable to capitalise as Steff Jones scored in the 18th minute.

Esher hit back through Joe Beckett on 21 minutes but Ampthill went ahead again with Tarrant converting his try to lead 15-8. Beckett’s second, converted by Sam Stanley, levelled the scores again before sustained pressure towards the end of the half resulted in Ampthill’s third, Sam Baker scoring and Tarrant converting to send Ampthill into a half-time lead. After the break Ampthill extended their lead through Jones’s second to secure the bonus point, Tarrant converting in off the post.

Ampthill continued to dominate, striking another penalty on 66 minutes before substitute Alex Mitchell went over for their fifth try on 70 minutes before Baker completed his double.
