Second half grit ensures Chester victory

- ■ By ANDREW SMITH

CHESTER centre Tom Foden came off the bench to inspire a second-half comeback and help his side claim maximum points.

In a game dominated by the home side throughout the first period Foden’s fine solo try saw the visitors take the lead for the first time with just 11 minutes remaining.

Two further tries from full-back Sean Green and replacement Andrew Baston then denied Tigers even a losing bonus point.

The hosts, looking for their second consecutive home win, took charge from the outset as Jamie Broadley, in his 100th game for the club claimed the opening score.

A Mark Ireland penalty was followed by Tigers’ second try when winger Tom Farrell squeezed over wide on the right for 15-0.

The visitors cut the deficit with their first real attack, skipper David Ford forcing his way over. And Ireland advanced the score to 18-7 with a penalty.

After the break, the home side looked to be in control as Broadley’s second try saw him shrug off a tackle for his 17th of the campaign.

Chester were stung into action and two quick tries from scrum-half Tom Holloway and lock Ross White brought them within six points at 23-17.

A yellow card for Tigers prop Nick Bingham was decisive as the sides traded penalties for 26-20 before Foden opened up the Tigers defence from 40 metres and Green and Baston crossed.
