Cain’s right, sort scrum mess or risk league-style farce

-

NICK Cain was 100 per cent correct in his column about raising the issue of crooked feeds in the scrum and refs turning a blind eye in every international and Aviva match.

My son, who is an U13 scrum-half, often gets pulled up by the refs for crooked feeds when it’s very marginal, yet I see No.9s literally feeding the ball into the No.8 in this year’s Six Nations, yet no punishment.

The commentators highlighted how the feed was not enforced during the France vs Scotland match.

Cain is right, if they can sort out high tackles, kicking in rucks, then World Rugby can stamp out crooked feeds and get refs to enforce the laws of the game. Players will adapt and the scrum will become once more a real contest, rather than an opportunity to get a penalty, which many supporters can’t work out why it was given in the first place. NATHAN FLATMAN Norfolk NICK Cain is absolutely right that the scrum feed is a mockery.

Watching France vs Scotland, the young No.9 Baptiste Serin not only put the ball into the second row, he rolls his left wrist so the ball is already spinning backwards when it hits the floor.

There is no way we should follow rugby league in what they call a scrum – it’s simply a way of keeping 12 blokes out of the way so the backs can have a run, they might as well hold hands and stand in a circle! JOHN CLAYTON via email
