Hughes denies Kidwelly with late penalty

IOAN Hughes held his nerve with a late penalty as Llanelli Wanderers snatched a draw against

Kidwelly in the battle of the top in the West.

Kidwelly looked set to win at 19-6, but debutant Hughes combined with Daniel Griffiths’ try, stunned the league leaders.

Jordan Rees crossed for a brace as Rhydyfelin remain top of the East after a hard-fought 25-18 win at

Blaenavon. Ross Lucas also scored with Dai Gratton kicking 10 points.

Nelson remain seven points adrift of the leaders following their 33-3 victory at home to Senghenydd with third-placed Penallta thumping Brecon 47-15. Ystrad Rhondda ran in four tries to beat Rhiwbina 26-0 in the battle of second and third of East-Central. Lock Mazin Al-Azzawi, Dan Roberts and Aron Clarke all crossed with Ashley John bagging the bonus-point that gives the hosts a sevenpoint cushion over their rivals. Treorchy stay top, beating Llanharan 34-17.

Nant Conwy thumped Bethesda 50-7 to remain leaders in the North. The visitors actually led 7-5 in the early exchanges following Ellis Jones’ try, converted by Gethin Long, before the hosts ran riot with eight different scorers. Delwyn Jones converted five of the tries.

Pwllheli remain three points from the top after winning 46-3 at Ruthin.

Caenarfon edged COBRA 23-22 in the standout game of the division with Delwyn Gwin and Dom Wau crossing for tries – the latter adding two conversion­s and three penalties to keep Caenarfon third. Bonymaen extended their West-Central lead with a 31-10 win at Ammanford. Lawrence Thomas, Paul Davies and Rhys Leonard all scored with Ben Davies sealing the bonus-point. Richard Cunniffe kicked his 100th point of the season following the conversion for the fourth try.

Aberavon Quins are four points adrift after losing 23-20 to Maesteg.
