In-form Worcester aiming to shock Wasps

- ■ By SAM JACKSON

WORCESTER went a long way to securing their Premiership safety last time out but flanker Sam Lewis insists there is no chance of the Sixways side taking their foot off the gas.

Their impressive victory over Bristol before the Cup break three weeks ago moved them seven points clear of the West Country side with five rounds still to play.

Lewis, who returned from a lengthy lay-off with a shoulder injury in November, has been a key figure in the Gary Gold revolution since the South African took over in January.

They have beaten Saracens and Bristol and run both Exeter Chiefs and Northampton Saints close and rather than worry about Bristol below them in the run-in, Lewis is targeting Sale in tenth, who are five points above.

“It’s always nice to go into a break on the back of a good win,” he said. “That was huge for us but we are not resting on our laurels.

“Gary said to us after that victory, we don’t want to sit back and think about that Bristol win as being job done, we want to push on and we have got Sale in our sights.

“Gary has made a real difference both to the way we have been playing and the results that we have been getting.

“Personally, it’s nice been nice to be back playing, it was a big relief coming back in November after a tough lay-off.”

Next up for the Warriors is a trip to Coventry to take on table-toppers Wasps at the Ricoh Arena today but with Francois Hougaard tearing it up at scrum-half, Lewis is confident his side can spring a surprise.

He added: “Francois, like Gary, has also made a big difference. We know about his quality and what he brings.

“Someone of that calibre is always going to be a big boost for the team and to be fair against Bristol he was absolutely brilliant.

“We know how tough it is going to be this weekend. Wasps are probably the form team in Europe at the moment but we are not going to make up the numbers.”
