Moates keeps Students safe as Kaye rattles up the points

- ■ By EVIE PROBERT

COACH George Chuter felt calm heads in the closing minutes from his Loughborough Students proved vital as they secured a narrow bonus-point win over Blackheath.

Will Kaye scored 20 points, including a try, while Jack Moates got over the whitewash twice as the Students ran in four tries.

Blackheath scored five of their own but only two were converted as the visitors fell just short and could only claim a losing bonus point.

Chuter said: “It was a very good display against a very strong Blackheath pack and in attack there was some good running rugby.

“Near the end of the game when it got very tight the boys kept their heads and defended well.

“It was great to get our first ever win away at Blackheath at the start of the season but to do the double is fantastic, something which the lads should be very proud of.”

Loughborough captain Isaac Miller added: “I’m absolutely chuffed with the win. The boys were outstanding and the energy was there which really showed in the result.’’

Star man Jack Moates made an early excellent break but Yiannis Loizias was held up on the tryline and it was Blackheath who scored the first try as Simon Whatling spotted the overlap on the blind side and touched down.

Kaye replied with a penalty from in front of the posts before Loughborough’s Moates scored the first of his two tries.

Blackheath responded with a try of their own, with quick hands into the corner, and Jake Lloyd got over the line but just before half-time, Kaye slotted another penalty putting the home side in front going into the break.

Blackheath opened the second half with a spectacular try through Markus Burcham who opened up the inside channel on Loughborough’s line.

But the home side, gunning for the double win over Blackheath, responded quickly as Moates got his second try of the game.

The visitors were displaying some remarkable skill in attack and this was rewarded with a penalty in front of the posts.
