Lions are tamed by league leaders

- ■ By JOHN LYON

AN INJURY in the warm up to powerful centre Forbes Edward disrupted the home side’s preparation and a hugely competitive Leicester Lions then gave the league leaders the toughest of afternoons at Paton Field.

However, in the end the Midlands side had to settle for a losing bonus point as Caldy pulled clear late in the second half. After an early penalty by Lions’ James Grayson, Caldy went close after a brilliant passage of play seemed to have put number eight JJ Dickinson in at the corner but he was adjudged to have been in touch in the act of scoring.

Minutes later, Dickinson made good with a score after a break by speedster Nick Royle.

Grayson then nudged the visitors ahead with a further couple of penalties and with defences on top, Caldy went in at the break two points in arrears.

Caldy were playing with greater tempo and after switching Tommy Banks to inside centre, his more direct play provided his centre partner Jack Lavin with a brace of scores to put Caldy into a lead they retained to the end. Replacement prop Ben Spokes grabbed a late try for the Lions and a final Grayson penalty secured a deserved losing bonus point.
