Scunthorpe hold on for narrow win
SCUNTHORPE survived a late Wharfedale onslaught as they held on for a dramatic victory in Lincolnshire.
The away side flew out of the blocks, and wing Scott Jordan finished off a well-worked move, with Tom Barrett converted for the two extra points.
Scunthorpe responded almost immediately when second row Dave Garbutt scored a great individual try straight from the kick off.
Ollie Cole added a second for the hosts with Adam Middleton converting as Scunthorpe took a 12-7 lead.
And a converted penalty try stretched arrears further with eight minutes to go before half-time.
Wharfedale clawed one back just before half time when replacement Josh Prell scored a walk in try, but Barrett missed the extras.
Both sides were throwing bodies to the cause at the start of the second half, and Scunthorpe made a crucial breakthrough when Jake Barron crossed on the hour, sealing Scunthorpe’s first bonus-point of the season.
Danny Vannett converted an easy penalty on 65 mins leaving the score at 27-12.
But tries from captain George Hedgley and Barrett minutes from time ensured a frantic finale, but Scunthorpe held on.
