Tight at the top as title race heats up

- By ANDREW MCQUARRIE

THINGS are hotting up in the race for top spot in the West-Central. The top six are split by just eight points with the first three seperated by just three.

Bonymaen lead the way with two games in hand with Bridgend Athletic and Aberavon

Quins trailing narrowly. The Quins were the biggest winners on a nail-biting Saturday. They trumped Bridgend 16-13 with Ryan Pugh holding his nerve with a penalty 10 minutes from end.

And Bonymaen lost at home to Trebanos 27-24 despite leading 17-10 at the break. Steff Lewis and Sam Davies kept the visitors in touch at half-time, and they went ahead 27-17 with Lewis dotting down for a second and full-back Luke Griffiths also going over.

Second-placed Nelson lost out to Ynysybwl 27-25 in the East. Dion Macintosh, Alex Taylor, Jack Griffiths and Sean Ireland all recorded tries, with Nelson’s only consolation coming in the form of a last-ditch losing bonuspoint courtesy of wing Daniel Davies. East-Central leaders

Treorchy suffered only their second defeat of the season after a tight 20-15 loss to third-placed Rhiwbina. Aaron Forey scored twice for the hosts with Rory Harries and Jamie Deaberu also crossing. The men in black had to hold firm at the death though, as The Zebras went in search of a win.

In the North, Pwllheli put their shock National Plate loss to Abercarn behind them as they ran riot against Abergele, coming out 117-0 victors. That result puts them three points behind rivals

Nant Conwy at the top with a game in hand.

Kidwelly remain top in the West following their comfortable 50-7 victory against Felinfoel. And their nearest challengers

Llanelli Wanderers fell 34-19 away at Penclawdd. Basement boys Loughor played out a thrilling 20-20 draw with Waunarlwydd.
