Munster v Toulouse

(Thomond Park) - April 1

-

Form in Europe this season: In a fearsome looking group Munster, inspired by the memory of their late coach Anthony Foley, qualified in fine style, the key probably being their double over Glasgow. No team on earth were going to beat Munster the day after Foley’s funeral and Glasgow were duly sent packing but Munster showed real grit and nous to win 14-12 at Glasgow. A 38-0 home win over Leicester was also impressive although they did slip up a week later at Welford Road.

Toulouse took the scenic route to the quarter finals as a best runner-up which took some doing as the third placed team in their pool – Connacht had four wins to their three wins and a draw. Rarely has the value of bonus points been better illustrated. Not that there can be any serious complaints. Toulouse and Connacht met in the final round with the winner certain to progress and Toulouse took that game 19-10. The French giants would also argue they were a tad unlucky to lose at the death at Wasps.

European pedigree: Stellar. Munster have become synonymous with the competition having won it twice and reached the quarter-finals or better on 15 occasions. In terms of Cup wins though Toulouse can trump even that with four titles. Crème de la crème.

Head to Head in Europe: Munster lead 3-2.

Home advantage? Yes, undoubtedly.

Thomond Park might not be the absolute citadel it once was but Munster still rarely lose big matches there and in the wake of coach Foley’s tragic death last October there will be a very special and inspiring atmosphere.

Key players: CJ Stander, far left, has been the inspiration all season for Munster and the stage is again set for him with Peter O’Mahony also likely to take starring role. For Toulouse it could be the last time we see the great Thierry Dusautoir, near left, on these shores. Wing Alexis Pallison has been on fire recently and will need watching.

Prediction: Munster will be in full cry, I expect them to win by ten points or more.
