Scunny boost survival chances

- ■ By GEOFF VICKRESS

A SCRAPPY affair saw Scunthorpe keep their hopes of survival alive with a marginal win.

The away side only travelled with 17 players but they used their pack to slow a youthful Luctonians who were intent on playing a running game in excellent conditions.

Lucs opened the scoring in the first minute when Joe Doyle’s break put Henry Monkley over.

Jake Barron got the away side back in the game with a try after seven minutes and, following a yellow card for Lucs’ Dan Smith, they increased their lead with a Jack Badley penalty.

Monkley was also carded for Lucs and Scunthorpe were awarded a penalty try – further swinging the momentum.

Late at the end of the first half, the away side deservedly increased their lead when Colin Chapman crossed the whitewash.

The home side played virtually the whole of the second period in Scunthorpe’s half and Frank Kelly’s try, following a delightful kick through from Will Hodnett, and Louis Silvers try brought the score back to a threepoint difference.

However, Scunthorpe secured the points when Badley added a penalty late into the second half and deserve to be applauded for their mammoth efforts against the odds to secure the victory.
