Village heading for the Champ in style

- ■ By JAMES LLOYD

RHYDYFELIN booked their place in the National Championship for next season after they spectacularly beat Treorchy 52-37 on aggregate in the play-off round. And Trebanos and Kidwelly will face off on May 18 and 25 to determine who will join Rhydyfelin in the Championship come September.

In the first leg of the play-off, Rhydyfelin beat the Zebras 42-24 back on May 6.

Winger Liam Watton scored a brace of tries with Sam Studley, Kieron Phillips, Jordan Rees and Mark Jones also getting their names on the scoresheet.

That put The Village in pole position going into the second leg on Saturday and although they were edged out by the Zebras, who squeezed to a 13-10 victory, it was ultimately not enough to overturn the 18-point deficit. In the East Division,

Nelson and Penallta battled to an enthralling 13-13 draw in the race to be the best of the rest, behind champions Rhydyfelin.

The Pitmen ended up three points clear of their rivals to take second spot on a day where Matthew Angel secured a 100th cap for the club, with Andrew Jenkins winning his 200th appearance.

Aberavon Quins finished their West-Central campaign in fourth place after a tight 32-26 win away at Ystalyfera.

They had to dig deep at the death as the Fera came back looking to sneak a final-day win.

But it was the Quins who held on, with a Jack Dacey double and further scores from Jordan Condon and Ryan Pugh proving enough for Aberavon.

Outside-half Marc Sheppard kicked three conversions and two penalties for the Port Talbot-based side.

The Fera – who agonisingly lost in the National Plate final a month ago – end the season in ninth.

In the other Division One fixture, Felinfoel beat

Crymych 22-10 in the West to secure their fourth place finish behind champions Kidwelly, Llanelli Wanderers and Gorseinon.
