Let’s be honest and cut through all this guff about welfare

-

I AM disgusted by the comments and antics of the ‘powers that be’ in regard to Lions tours. Shame on them.

I cannot be the only one who sees through their guff. Player welfare? Please!

A very admirable goal as players do play a stupid amount of games, and the fact burnout/serious injuries aren’t more common can only be credit to physios etc. But the Lions are once every four years.

Where are their efforts beforehand, say a max of three game before a mandatory rest? None, because they don’t really care. All that matters is money. Dare I say, this is just a power play to force more cash out of a ridiculously successful financial enterprise. The clubs are more than happy to market the fact they have Lions in their squads!

I may be a romantic, but BIL tours are rightly legendary. Considering how fractured the UK has become over the last few years, it is still so special to see four nations come together as one to take on the best of the rest.

My housemate, an avid round-baller, and perpetual rugby scorner, was even been caught up in the buzz of the tour (even if he still can’t grasp the rules!). Any efforts to neuter, or even put down this magnificent institution, will only secure the wrath of real rugby: the fans. RAB COOPER Birmingham

IT’S all really very simple, isn’t it? Get rid of the pointless LV= Cup, give the players a couple of rest weeks and then let all the competitions finish mid-May. GREG TERRY via email
