Williams working hard to put heat on No.9 rivals

- ALEX BYWATER

TOMOS Williams says he is ready to add more strings to his scrum-half bow as he hopes to make a big impression with Cardiff Blues and Wales this season.

Williams was in the Wales squad which faced Tonga and Samoa earlier this summer, but failed to make an appearance against either of the Pacific Island nations.

The 22-year-old, right, is nonetheless seen by the national hierarchy as a future No.9 option and is likely to be involved in Warren Gatland’s squad this autumn alongside the established Rhys Webb and Gareth Davies. Williams says there’s more to come from him in the campaign ahead. “It was a good experience to tour with Wales in the summer and I enjoyed it,” he said. “I'm looking to carry on my good form at the start of this season and have another good campaign with Cardiff Blues. I’ll take some confidence from the tour into this season, but at the end of the day it’s still a new season and we’re starting all over again. I have to concentrate on the Blues now.

“I’m always looking to improve my game and being with Wales helped me to learn new things I can use moving forward.”

Williams may be without a Wales cap, but his slick service and razor-sharp eye for a gap mark him out as a promising talent for the future.

His task this season is to push first-choice scrumhalf Lloyd Williams hard at the Blues and see what happens.

An international debut against Georgia in Cardiff on November 18 would be no surprise as Wales head coach Warren Gatland begins to plan for the 2019 World Cup.

“I have a good relationship with Lloyd at the Blues, but all I can do is focus on myself. If I do that, things will work out for themselves,” Williams said.

“I have to make sure I keep working on my game because I can still get better in a number of areas.”
