MANU TUILAGI’S RECALL

I am impressed by his dedication. He’s had a tough time – the amount of injuries he’s had would be enough to knock people away. He is in good physical condition, and Leicester were happy with his progress and I believe they still are. Everything was pretty positive.

...AND HIS NZ ‘X’ FACTOR

I don’t think anyone’s did it with the Lions. No one has ripped them apart – apart from Manu (in 2012).

KYLE SINCKLER’S LIONS TOUR

During the tour he was asked to play a role for them and I think he did pretty well. He’s got to understand that the team comes before the individual. If we wants to develop his rugby career, that’ll be the big thing for him.

...AND SINCKLER’S NIGHTCLUB SPAT

You need to pick the right place to have a drink. After the 3rd Test for the Lions you don’t go to a crowded club in Auckland. You’re going to have every idiot in Auckland wanting to take him on because they know he’s a hot head. There’ll be some bloke saying to his mate, “hey, go and talk to that idiot over there”. Experience teaches you that. The experienced players don’t go to those clubs. They find a place to have a drink because they know that night’s going to be volatile and some Kiwi will want to make a name for himself. It’s not a black mark against him – but it will be if he does it again.

CHRIS ROBSHAW

Robshaw’s world class. I still regret that column I wrote for the Mail... He is just the most unselfish guy. He works so hard for the team. His influence on those young guys – he knows those guys Curry and Underhill could take his spot...but he led by example on that tour. He had no hope of playing in that second Test but he just worked every hour, every minute to get fit – and got on the field and played superbly. Just a great role model for the team.

It goes to show he is a leader. But he is a leader in a different way. I got the chance to speak to some of the New Zealand coaches in the provinces, and they all hold him in high esteem. He is a really important player for us and he has the chance to keep developing that.

JONNY MAY’S MOVE TO TIGERS

We picked him at Gloucester, it doesn’t matter where he plays. If he is playing for Upper Mongolia and playing well, we’d still pick him.

TOM CURRY

Curry before the tour was this young kid playing off the bench for Sale, but as we saw on tour, he’s a very good player. But his test now is to keep developing; he’s got to keeping developing like George Smith has. He can’t just be a jackal trickster – he’s got to be able to carry the ball, make good decisions at the breakdown. So, his evolution will decide how quickly he becomes a regular Test player.
