Guernsey defences destroyed by Knights firepower

- ■ By KATIE DAUNT

DONCASTER KNIGHTS showed their Championship class as they treated the Guernsey crowd to a 15-try display at Footes Lane yesterday.

In a pre-season friendly against the Guernsey Raiders of the London & South-East Premier, three tiers below the level at which Knights ply their trade, the extra pace and fitness of the professional outfit told against gallant hosts, who kept fighting to the end of the four 20 minute quarters.

The Bulumakau brothers, in particular, terrorised the home defence and they scored the opening three tries between them – Junior getting the first before outside center Andy added the next two.

Before the end of the opening period, Lloyd Hayes had added the first try of his hattrick.

Dave Nelson, Paul Jarvis, Tyson Lewis and Michael Hills also crossed the whitewash before half-time before Hayes added two more in the third quarter, with Tom Jones and Charlie Foley also touching down in that period.

The scoring was completed in the fourth quarter by Aaron Carpenter, Alex Shaw and a second for Junior Bulumakau.

“Today we showed what we are trying to do; when you have got the pace we’ve got, that’s the game I want to play,’ said Doncaster Knights director of rugby Clive Griffiths.

“When we broke we finished it off nine times out of ten and that’s because of the extra fitness and pace and from training full-time, not through any disrespect to Guernsey.

“They tried all the way to the end and they won some big moments. The Guernsey boys will learn a lot from it.”
