TWO tries in the final five minutes clawed back victory for Northampton and spoiled Dave Rennie’s first game at the helm of the Glasgow Warriors.

The former Waikato Chiefs’ coach looked like he would start with a positive result, leading 14-7 with five minutes remaining, before a quick-fire try double from Alex Mitchell and Tom Collins turned the result on its head at 19-14.

Saints wing Ahsee Tuala said: “It’s good for us to be starting well in the preseason ahead of the Premiership, we’ll take that result.

“I reckon Glasgow will be a top side this season.”

It was not a match to savour with long set-pieces and little free-flowing rugby as both sides experimented with different player variations in typically tough Scottish summer weather.

The first half ended 7-7 after Glasgow scrum-half George Horn’s effort was cancelled by Tuala who scored after collecting a deft chip from Harry Mallander.

The second-half was littered with substitutions and that stop-start feel made for a slow contest.

Adam Ashe doubled the Warriors’ try count on 50 minutes, Adam Hastings added the conversion, to give Glasgow a 14-7 lead that they managed to hold until the closing stages when Mitchell and Collins claimed the spoils.

“It was good to finally get a run out but I’m disappointed with the result.” said Hastings.
