Hook backs Owen to star in Welsh two playmaker system

- ■ By ALEX BYWATER

JAMES Hook has urged Wales to adopt a twin playmaker system to take them to the next level.

And the talented 32-yearold believes Owen Williams – who has stepped into his shoes at Gloucester – must be considered as an option by head coach Warren Gatland this November.

Hook left Kingsholm this summer to return to former side Ospreys and made his second debut for the Welsh region in their pre-season tune-up with Leicester.

He says Williams, who has swapped the Tigers for the Cherry & Whites, can be a star at both club and international level in the campaign ahead.

“I’ve always rated Owen and I think since he’s gone to the Premiership with Leicester he’s thrived,” Hook told TRP.

“I’m not sure whether he’ll play 10 or 12 because they have Billy Burns but Gloucester need someone like Owen because he’s got a lot of experience for someone who is still young.

“His move is good news for Wales. If he plays well he’ll be pushing for a place for the autumn series. He’s an excellent player who can play in several different positions.”

Williams made his Wales debut this summer, coming off the bench in the 24-6 win over Tonga at Auckland’s Eden Park. Hook won the last of his 81 international caps in 2015 and hasn’t given up hope of a recall from Gatland now he is back playing at the Liberty Stadium.

The former Perpignan back wants the Kiwi head coach to follow the model he used with success with the British & Irish Lions by combining two creative talents in midfield.

“The Lions showed an intent to play this summer and I was pleased to see that,” Hook said. “Having two playmakers in midfield is a system that takes a little bit of time to get used to as a player, but I think it would be great to see Wales play wider and with a more style.”

Hook added: “I think some of the young guns coming through the Welsh system will stand them in good stead going into the future.

“Hopefully we can see them given a chance to play an attacking brand of rugby because the talent is certainly there.”
