Cockerill: Quit your comfort zone or move on

- ■ By ALEX BYWATER

RICHARD Cockerill has challenged his Edinburgh players to step out of their comfort zone or risk being moved on by the Scottish strugglers.

Former Leicester boss Cockerill has taken over the Guinness PRO14 side for the start of the new-look competition saying it’s time the Myreside outfit made the step to the next level.

Edinburgh have struggled to challenge previously and tough-talking Cockerill admits the squad have had a culture shock following his appointment.

“I’ve been surprised by the quality of the playing group but I’ve pushed them out of their comfort zone,” he said. “It’s no good if they’re thinking, ‘there’s only two professional teams in Scotland and if I stay fit, there’s a decent chance I’ll play for my country’.

“I’m not saying that’s the thought process across the board, but it’s a feel I’ve got. We have to create an environment where people aren’t comfortable here.

“Most of the players understand what it takes to perform, but human nature dictates you’ll take the path of least resistance unless you’re very driven. The players know what I want. If they don’t want to be a part of it, then I’m OK with that, they can go somewhere else.”

Edinburgh were ninth in the Pro12 last season and Cockerill, who insists his sacking by Leicester and brief spell with Toulon have made him a better coach, has realistic expectations.

“We have to earn respect in this competition and get some consistency. There’s no point us looking at the play-offs or the Champions Cup because we’re not there yet,” Cockerill added.

“In the last seven years we’ve been a bottom four team. But we had a run to a European final so we know on our day we can turn up and beat anyone.”

He added: “The experiences I’ve had have made me better. I went from Leicester where I was for a long time and had a lot of success, to getting the sack and going to Toulon.

“Now I’m at Edinburgh. It’s a club which hasn’t been successful and needs rebuilding, but I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
