Tries galore as Salop cruise to third win

-

NEWPORT Salop set the early pace as they enjoyed another try-laden victory, securing all five points for the third successive week with a 62-13 win at Newbold on Avon.

Having put 76 then 45 points on the board in the opening two matches, Newport went past the half century again and have now recorded a remarkable 183 in three games.

Doncaster Phoenix and Peterborough Lions met having taken maximum points from their first two, but it was the Lions who kept their perfect record, joining Newport on 15 points with a 30-11 away victory. Birmingham and Solihull Bees also record a third victory, claiming a bonus point in a 34-15 win at Bridgenorth.

A penalty try followed Nathan Tilsley’s early score to give Bees a 14-8 half time lead with further

scores from Matt Spink and Jimmy Oliver sealing all five points.

Sam Tebbs' last gasp try gave Derby a thrilling victory, 37-32 at home to Sandbach.

The visitors had taken an early 19-5 lead with three tries in the opening 20 minutes, only for Derby to score 20 unanswered points with tries from McGrath Van Wyk, Josh Tizard and Pete Wilcox.

Van Wyk’s second pulled them clear, but a Sandbach try got the visitors back within one and they looked to have snatched victory through a late penalty before Tebbs late late show.

Lichfield also picked up five points as Old Halesonians second half comeback couldn’t prevent a 27-19 defeat, leaving them as the only side yet to claim a point.

After only a single Lichfield try in the first half, they looked to be in control adding two further scores to lead 22-0, but Old Hales ran in three tries of their own, only for Lichfield to seal proceedings with a fourth late on.

Nuneaton are also still searching for a first victory after going down 36-27 at

Longton, who edged ahead 12-10 by halfway, before pulling clear in the second half. The days final game saw

Bournville complete a comfortable 36-12 win at home to Scunthorpe.

The hosts were in control with a half-time 21-9 lead and they went on to seal a comfortable bonus point win.
