Wasps down the Jets to get back on track

- ■ By SAM JACKSON

WASPS put their crushing defeat at the hands of Newcastle behind them by grinding out a 22-12 success at Sale Jets on Monday.

Having been humbled 67-21 in front of their home supporters by Falcons, Wasps arrived at Heywood Road with a point to prove.

Sale, who included former Wasps hooker Rob Webber, as well as two other players with international experience in Tongan Halani Aulika and Samoan Johnny Leota exploded out of the blocks with Arron Reed breaking through to set up George Nott for a third-minute try.

But Wasps hit back courtesy of Will Millett, feeding TJ Harris who charged over the whitewash.

The visitors continued to stream forward and had their second try when a successful lineout led to Tom Willis and Aaron O’Sullivan combining to tee up Millett for a score.

Jets’ Alex Dolly pulled a penalty wide in the 30th minute and then, after his brother Nic was shown a yellow card for entering from the side, Wasps took full advantage by driving Will Stuart over the line for a 19-7 lead at the break.

In the second period, the visitors’ Ben Harris was yellow-carded for foul play and Laurence Pearce chipped away at the deficit with a try but Jacob Umaga rounded things off for Wasps with a 66th-minute penalty. Harlequins recorded a seven-try 45-7 success at London Irish.

Harry Sloan, Dino Lamb, John Okafor and Tim Visser all dotted down in the first period, with Ollie Hoskins crossing for Irish.

It remained mostly oneway traffic in the second period, with Callum Waters and a James Lang brace completing the job for Harlequins at Hazelwood.

Northampton turned around a 10-3 half-time deficit against Leicester to claim a 38-10 win.

They went over five times in the second half with two from prop Jamal Ford-Robinson setting things up. A blistering start helped

Exeter Braves claim a 2819 win over Bristol United while Gloucester United beat Bath United 36-26.
