Damian over as Brynnawr remain joint top

SWALEC Division One round-up

- By JOHN WILLIAMS

DAMIAN Hudd was among the try scorers as Brynmawr stripped Ynysybwl of their unbeaten record to stay tied with Brecon at the top of Division 1 East after a 52-17 triumph.

While Brecon were winning 36-0 at Dowlais, Brynmawr were running in seven tries to stun their hosts. Josh Congreve and Nathan Preece got two each and Hudd, Craig Fillier and Dan Wall got the others.

The visitors raced into a 28-0 lead to bag a first-half bonus point before Nathan King, Alex Taylor and Dewi Voyle mounted a minirevival with home ties that cut the gap to 11 points. But then Brynmawr hit back with three more tries and a penalty as outside half Dan Butler ended with 17 points.

Ystrad Rhondda were given a hard time by Dinas

Powys, who took the lead with a penalty and then hit back after conceding a try to reach half-time with a 10-3 lead. Ystrad lost Ryan Howells to a yellow card just before the break, but Adam Lewis powered over for a try to give the unbeaten home team a 12-10 lead.

Kurtis Williams then stretched the lead with his side’s third try and the race was on for the bonus point. Nathan Hughes brought it up with the fourth try and Thomas Jeavons then eased home nerves with a fifth try to complete a 29-17 win. It was pretty tense at

Llantrisant in Division 1 East Central. On a treacherous pitch two penalties just kept the home side ahead of Lewis Pearce’s solo penalty for Rumney at the break.

From 6-3 the home side took control with a try early in the second half and then added a penalty to deny a late try for the visitors from Joe Morgan and end with a 16-10 victory. Rhiwbina held onto their unbeaten record with a 19-3 win over

Llanharan, while St Joseph’s thumpedMountain Ash 42-26.

Dunvant are still top in Division 1 West after their 24-9 home win over

Tycroes, while in Division 1 West Central, Maesteg Quins beat Kenfig Hill 34-7.
