Henson intensity driving Dragons recovery

- ■ By STEFFAN THOMAS

HALLAM Amos hopes Bernard Jackman’s band of brothers can guide Dragons to success.

The Rodney Parade outfit have won their last two home games after a tough start to the season.

Amos has come through the region’s youth system to join fellow academy products Ollie Griffiths, Tyler Morgan, Jack Dixon and Elliot Dee in the side.

The Wales wing hopes that close bond will help his team consign their status as Welsh rugby’s strugglers to the history books.

“Jack, myself, Elliot and Ollie have played together since we were 14,” said Amos. “It’s nice we are starting to change the ethos of the club and hopefully we will see more good performances on the pitch.

“It is rare in professional sport to be able to play with your friends and people you have grown up with, but it’s absolutely brilliant.”

Dragons were taken over by the Welsh Rugby Union this summer and Jackman was quickly installed as head coach.

His decision to sign former Wales international Gavin Henson divided opinion, but the 35-year-old has proved an astute acquisition.

Fly-half Henson has helped bring the best out of those around him and Amos has been impressed.

“Gavin is good on the training pitch and he carries an intensity with him that you see in the top players,” added the former Cardiff University student.

“Leigh Halfpenny and Dan Biggar are the same. They demand the best standards in training and that is definitely helping us out on the pitch. You can see when he plays that his game management is second to none and it’s great having someone with his experience leading the charge at 10.”
