Four from four as Saracens continue fast start

- ■ By ALEX BOWMER

SARACENS extended their 100 per cent start to the season with a comfortable victory over Wasps, on Saturday.

The north London side thrashed Worcester Valkyries 74-0 last time out, while Wasps came into the encounter off the back of a 32-28 win over DMP.

First-half tries from Helena Roland, Garnet Mackinder and Zoe Harrison set the tone, with Lottie Clapp sealing the bonus point and Marlie Packer rounding off the scoring.

And despite the visitors showing plenty of endeavour, they were unable to breach Sarries’ defensive line.

The deadlock was broken on 17 minutes following an incisive break from Nina Vistisen, with Roland picking up the pieces to go over in the corner.

Shortly after a Harrison penalty, right wing Mackinder scored a superb solo effort, collecting the ball from 40m out and showing blistering speed to evade some desperate tackling from the visitors.

Rob Cain’s side then profited from Wasps going down to 14 players as Harrison got in on the act, with a quick lineout catching Wasps napping – the catch and drive proving devastatingly effective.

Clapp then got her team the bonus point they craved, switching the direction of attack to find herself in acres of space and making no mistake in the finish.

England international Packer was keen to add to her astonishing six-try haul against Worcester Valkyries last week and a strong maul ensured that she got on the scoresheet.

Wasps continued to work doggedly but did not have the invention required.

Elizabeth Crake of Wasps has been suspended for six weeks after being found guilty of biting Ceri Large in last week’s match against Darlington MP.

She is free to play again on November 6.
