Gallaher’s gallant name lives on

-

The All Blacks released a video last Wednesday to mark the centenary of Dave Gallaher’s death at Passchendaele at the age of 43. The current New Zealand captain, Kieran Read, paid this tribute to the first one whose family emigrated from the shores of Lough Swilly in Co. Donegal:

“Dave didn’t have to go to war. He was too old but he was so proud and wanted to protect his country that he went and lost his life for us. Dave was a humble man from humble beginnings.”

His name lives on. Next month the All Blacks will be in France, playing for the Dave Gallaher trophy.
