Renwick pulls the strings in Clifton success

- ■ By ROGER OPIE

CLIFTON dominated both at scrum and lineout but this win was largely a result of some individual moments of brilliance.

Ultimately the Dons showed themselves to be an athletic team with a never say die attitude who deserved their losing bonus point. Clifton will have some frustrations about not securing the victory before the final quarter.

The opening score was Charlie Hubert’s try as his kick and chase was followed by crafty weaving to cross with Chris Levesley converting. Levesley was constantly inspiring his backs with Hamish Renwick running the impressive Clifton lineout.

Wimbledon broke well for Dan Cheers to score with James Doe converting. Levesley’s break then gave the elusive Callum Roberts the chance to cross and he extended the Clifton lead after the interval when scrum-half Mitch Spencer took a quick penalty.

The Dons hit back with a Doe penalty and a welltaken try by Sam Waltier with Doe converting. A tense last quarter ended with an exchange of penalties between Doe and Levesley with Clifton holding on.

The Clifton forwards will take great satisfaction from their dominance in their scrums, the ground made in their rolling mauls and the impressive lineout performance.

The Dons showed resilience in the final stages to earn a deserved bonus point.
