Lions roar again to extend perfect start with Bees in pursuit

PETERBOROU­GH Lions continued their perfect start to the Midlands Premier with a bonus-point 31-20 victory against Newbold on Avon.

Michael Watts scored a double for the league leaders as they made it six wins from six while Michael Bean, Joe Anderson and Andy Cruthers were also on the scoresheet.

The league leaders had scored two converted tries in the opening six minutes before letting their visitors back into the tie and Newbold did take the lead but the Lions regrouped and took victory. Birmingham & Solihull remain hot on their heels after also making it six wins from six with an emphatic 72-17 victory over Lichfield.

JT Nabetelevu scored a hat-trick for the hosts while Tawanda Chipadza, Nathan Tilsley, Max Rodman, Umraan Jadwatt, Harry O’Brien, twice, Matt Spink and Harry Smith were also on the scoresheet for their triumphant side.

Newport Salop also continued their encouragin­g start to the season as they took their fifth win of the season with a 62-17 victory at Old Halesonian­s. Derby scored in the last minute to take the narrowest of victories with a 22-21 score line against Bridgnorth. Ben Marlow netted a hat-trick of tries for the visitors on their way to victory.

Luke Smith bagged a double as Bournevill­e took a 34-29 victory over

Doncaster. Dan Brown, Drew Harper and Dan McCue were also amongst the try scorers as the Birmingham side took their third win of the campaign.

Sandbach scored nine tries as they recorded an emphatic 72-0 victory in an unforgivin­g performanc­e against Longton.

Tom Namgauds and Cameron Crompton crossed for the hosts in the first half as they went in 23-0 ahead at the break.

In the second half they piled on the pressure with Joe Jepps crossing twice while Anthony Davies, Benny Elliot, Crompton, Ally Burton and Sam Winstanley also scored on a fine afternoon for the hosts.

Finally Nuneaton remain in the pack of teams in the top half by clinching a 53-25 victory at Scunthorpe. Meanwhile in London & South East Premier, there was just one game, Westcombe Park getting the better of Towcestria­ns, 36-27. The visitors had the better of the opening half, leading 27-7 at the break after tries from Bradley Batup and James Minfield, as well as a penalty try and 12 points from the boot of Micky Zanirato.

Dario Gorman scored the sole Towcestria­ns try in the first half, but they were better after the break.

Calum Threlfall crossed first, with James Salvey converting and then adding a try of his own.

Zanirato responded with a penalty, with Joe Bonner crossing for a bonus-point score, although Eugene Baxter crossed at the death for the home side.
