Away joy for Sale as Mayor stars in victory

- ■ By NICK DOYLE

A DOMINANT second-half display saw Sale pull away to come out worthy winners in an entertaining game in West Yorkshire.

In the opening period, Sale opted for a kicking game which Otley worked hard to contain.

In the second half, they kept the ball in hand and ran in three tries to take the game away from the hosts.

Otley nearly scored in the opening minutes but were caught crossing metres away from the posts, and were punished after 11 minutes when Chris Mayor took a ball in the middle of Otley’s half to go under the posts.

Sale spent most of the half in Otley territory, and defended stoutly during the hosts’ attacks.

However, eventually the hosts broke through, Otley getting the ball across the pitch for Tom Hodson to score in the corner.

But Sale extended their lead shortly after the restart after Otley were penalised for not releasing ten metres out, Chris Johnson stepping up.

Hodson reduced the deficit with a penalty early in the second half, before the arrears were reduced through Alex Beaumont.

But efforts from Tom Ailes, Aaron Reed and Will Davies, all converted by Johnson, sealed the bonus point for Sale.

It was no more than the away side desrved, as they showed patience to take their opportunities despite a spirited display from the hosts.
