Longbottom promises to rip into Harlequins

- By NEALE HARVEY

SARACENS are determined to take their free-scoring form into today’s Anglo-Welsh tie against Harlequins, says Aussie prop Kieran Longbottom.

Having notched 31 tries in seven Premiership matches and a further 13 in Champions Cup clashes against Northampton and Ospreys, the Men in Black are Europe’s market leaders when it comes to crossing the whitewash.

Longbottom, who gets a rare chance to stake a claim after playing third fiddle to Juan Figallo and Vincent Koch, told TRP: “We’ve moved our attacking game on this season, trying to stay one step ahead.

“Other teams are trying to tighten up and defend against what we do, but we’re trying to evolve and there are a couple of things we’ve added to our game that have made us a far more potent attacking threat.

“There were some growth issues early on but things have really started to click and we’re putting the whole package together.”

Longbottom has remained patient since rejoining Saracens from Sale in the summer, but the 31-year-old hopes to bring his experience to bear in today’s predominantly youthful side.

“Vincent and Juan are amazing players who’ve earned their spots so far. They’re playing brilliantly, so what can I do?” Longbottom said.

“I’ve just got to rip in when I get the chance and not let this team down.

“I’ll look to bring a bit of stability if things do go astray and it’s up to guys like me to breed confidence amongst the young guys to ensure we get the right result – we’re looking to do well in this competition.”

Saracens tuned-up in the week with a training session against London Scottish. Longbottom explained: “With so many of our senior guys away we had London Scottish in this week to train against and they gave us a good workout.

“We’ve trained hard for this match to make sure the young lads coming in know it’s time to step up and run the plays. For all players it’s a chance to put in a performance and put your hands up.”

Academy coach Kelly Brown makes his senior coaching bow, with Longbottom adding: “I played with Kelly and it’s awesome being coached by him. He’s stamped his own philosophy and enthusiasm on us.”

Academy duo Alistair Crossdale and Danny Cutmore make their senior debuts while Tadgh McElroy, Sean Reffell, Alex Gilksten and Reuben BirdTulloch could also earn their first cap from the bench. Ben Earl captains the side from No.8.
