Winless Valkyries bitten by improving Sharks

- ■ By ANDREW PARKIN

DARLINGTON Mowden Park Sharks scored seven tries to see off winless Worcester Valkyries at the Northern Echo Arena and secure their second win of the season.

The Valkyries, who have lost all seven of their games in the league so far, failed to score a point in the second half having gone into the break trailing 10-5.

But five unanswered tries by the Sharks in the second 40 paved the way for their comfortable victory and secure back-to-back wins for the hosts, who will hope to continue the positive momentum generated by these victories.

It means the Sharks have now taken 12 points from their last five games and are unbeaten in their last three following their 0-0 draw with Firwood Waterloo and their first win over Loughborough Lightning last weekend.

The Valkyries threw new signing Hannah Bluck straight into the starting line-up but were unable to end their losing run despite the Welsh centre’s influence.

The Sharks led 10-5 at the break and two quick-fire tries from Ale Lewis set the hosts on their way early in the second half, stretching their advantage to 22-5.

Former England captain Katy McLean also forced her way over the tryline before a wonderful attacking move was finished by Kenny Thomas.

The Valkyries remain without a single point after seven rounds of the Tyrrells Premier 15s and now have a negative points difference in excess of 300.

The Sharks must now prepare for a much stiffer test next time out.

They travel to Allianz Park to face unbeaten Saracens who sit second in the league.
