Nine-try Wallabies send their warning to Wales

- ■ By SCOTT WILSON

THREE second-half tries in a spirited fight-back were not enough for Japan as they were swamped by the Wallabies in Yokahoma’s Nissan Stadium.

Centre Tevita Kuridrani scored a hat-trick for Australia, with midfield partner Samu Kerevi crossing twice and wing Henry Speight, hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau, No.9 Nick Phipps and lock Rob Simmons also going over.

Reece Hodge did a sound job at stand-off with fullback Kurtley Beale sharing playmaking duties to devastating effect.

This was Japan’s best result against Australia in the five games they’ve played since 1975, but the Wallabies showed an attacking prowess which will worry Wales.

Head coach Michael Cheika said: “Our mindset and attitude were very good.”

Japanese indiscipline aided Australia’s first three tries as they kicked for touch and then crossed the line from the lineouts.

A bullocking run from No. 8 McMahon led to Kuridrani getting on the end of a Beale offload for his first. Hodge and Beale combined to created the space for Kuridrani’s second to end the first half.

The Blossoms came out strongly for Wimpie van der Walt to score before Wallabies wing Henry Speight zig-zagged several defenders, allowing Kuridani to get his third.

Phipps and Simmons extended the lead before Japan No.8 Amanaki Mafi and lock Kazuki Himeno went over as the home-side never gave up.
