MERTHYR edged out Bedwas to claim an important victory in the east section of the Principality Premiership at the Bridgefield.

The Ironmen made a strong start and took the lead in just the sixth minute courtesy of a penalty try.

Full-back Matthew Jarvis then showed his impressive kicking ability with a well-taken penalty to edge the champions further ahead.

He added another shortly before the break to give the Ironman a strong 13-0 halftime lead.

Bedwas got themselves back into the game early in the second half with No. 8 Andrew Waite claiming the try.

Waite got the glory, but the try was all about a superb run and dummy pass from Steffan Jones, who went on to add the conversion with a perfectly executed kick.

Jarvis killed any hopes of a Bedwas comeback with his third penalty of the game before Kristian Phillips chased down his forward kick to cross the whitewash and seal the victory for the Ironmen. Jarvis added the conversion.

The Wass refused to accept defeat and set up a tense finale after Waite bagged his second try of the game. Both sides sensed further scores in the remaining quarter of an hour but the defences held firm as Merthyr claimed a hard-fought victory, their sixth triumph in a row for the in-form visitors.
