Maynard drives the Drovers to a hard-fought victory

- By PETER HUGHES

JACK Maynard produced a fine display for Llandovery as they laboured to victory over Aberavon at a blustery Church Bank.

In an error-strewn game, both sides struggling with the basics of the game, all that separated them after half an hour was a penalty from the boot of Aberavon fly-half Steffan Williams.

It looked like it might be a case of third time lucky around the 20-minute mark when, following another lineout five metres out, wing Lee Williams, looked to have scored in the corner but had put a foot in touch just short of the line.

The Drovers opted for the easy points, standoff Jack Maynard was able to level the scores.

It was Maynard who gave the home side the lead with a well-taken 39th minute dropped goal.

The Drovers came close to claiming a try in the 63rd minute following a break by second row Joe Powell but were forced to settle for a second drop-goal from the impressive Maynard.

Llandovery did finally claim a try in the 71st minute when well-judged penalty kick by Maynard from the half way line got the Drovers close to the Aberavon line.

The pack did the rest of the work with replacement prop Scott Jenkins touching down.

A similar effort produced an injury time try for Wizards replacement prop Jon Thomas but their hosts had the last word with a try under the posts for centre Dafydd Pritchard put the icing on the victory.
