Hat-trick by Elder downs youthful Dragons

- ■ By TOM WILLIAMS

YORKSHIRE coach James Lowes praised the attitude of his players after overcoming a Dragons side who fought until the death.

Tries from Harry Newborn, Harry Robinson, Darren Atkins and a hattrick from Chris Elder inspired the home side and Lowes said: “I was pleased with the team, the boys that came in did a fantastic job.

“I felt we thoroughly deserved the result against a Welsh side who were never going to give up.”

Dragons scored three tries of their own through Callum Jones, Joe Goodchild and Steffan Jones and coach James Chapron believes the score line flattered Carnegie.

“I thought we were very competitive throughout and the game turned on small margins, especially given they scored two interception tries,” he said.

Dragons made the perfect start when Jones raced over at the right-hand corner following some neat handling in the build-up.

But Carnegie hit back with a try from Newborn who found himself at the back of a powerful driving lineout. The visitors’ second score came from a cross kick from outside half Dorian Jones which was taken by Goodchild who wriggled his way over.

Robinson then scored in the corner on debut before Elder weaved over. Carnegie led 17-10 at half time.

Atkins pulled Carnegie clear just after half time.

Steffan Jones hit back for Dragons before Brown crossed for Carnegie.Elder completed his hat-trick to put the game to bed.
